“The Best of Abraham Gesner” by Allison Mitcham, Lancelot Press, Hantsport, Nova Scotia, ISBN 0-88999 585 0: A must read. The quotes in it from his reports about the horrific health and living conditions of Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaq are shocking, to put it mildly.
Gesner (1797–1864) was a Nova Scotian, a medical doctor, a fellow of the Geological Society, a scientist, inventor and author. His most famous output was the development of kerosene, which laid the foundation for our modern petrochemical industry. He patented it on March 27, 1855.
